In the opening scenes of the film, the Bhargava family’s patriarch, Ram Prasad Bhargava (Naseeruddin Shah) dies suddenly, bringing his large family back into their old bungalow where his wife Savitri (Supriya Pathak Kapur) now lives alone. The arrival of six children and various other relatives adds to the chaos. What’s more – old contentions are brought into limelight and the family struggles to make it through the 13 days of mourning. Actress Seema Pahwa makes her directorial debut (she has also written the film) with ‘Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi’. She manages to give a realistic portrayal of familial relationships in an Indian setting. However, her writing looks like a half-hearted effort as this family drama is neither funny nor emotional enough to keep you engaged throughout. Only some of the exchanges between the daughters-in-law are crafted.
Ramprasad’s entire family gathers under one roof for 13 days after his death, to perform and observe the Hindu traditions and rituals called the tehrvi. During the course, the family’s dynamics, politics, and insecurities come out, and then they realise that the importance of people and things are only evident in retrospect.
